Wrestlers duel at VUHS tournament

VERGENNES — Eight local wrestlers reached the podium at the competitive Bob Benoure Invitational, a 23-team tournament hosted on Saturday by Vergennes Union High School that lured schools from Maine, New Hampshire and New York as well as Vermont.
The Commodores had the best local team finish, taking ninth overall and fifth among the Vermont teams competing. Middlebury finished 12th, Otter Valley was 15th, and Mount Abraham ended in a tie for 21st.
Five of the host Commodores placed, led by Ryan Paquin in third place at 182 pounds. Three Commodores took fourths: Trevon Smith at 126, Jeb Hodsden at 152 and Brandon Cousino at 170. Rounding out the top scorers for VUHS was Ethan Reardon, who was sixth at 132.
Only two of an injury-plagued Tiger team reached the podium. James Whitley led the way by taking third at 138, and Nick Beauchamp was fifth at 195.
OV’s Tyson Cram also placed, finishing fifth at 132.
