Panther women’s basketball wins one of three

PLATTSBURGH — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team won once in three recent outings as its second semester play opened. The Panthers are 7-4 heading into league play, which begins this weekend with home games vs. Bates at 7 p.m. on Friday and Tufts at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
On Tuesday, host Plattsburgh took control with a 15-2 first-half run on the way to a 79-58 win over the Panthers. The Cardinals led at the break, 40-22, and led by at least 20 for most of the second half.
Rachel Crews, Elizabeth Knox, Sarah Kaufman and Siobhan O’Sullivan each scored 11 points for Middlebury. Kaufman added a team-best eight rebounds, and Knox handed out six assists.
On Dec. 31, Middlebury opened second-half play with a 48-41 loss at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA). The Trailblazers outscored Middlebury in the second half, 26-13. The Panthers hit just four of 21 shots from the floor after the break.
The Panthers had held a 28-22 lead at halftime, but the Trailblazers opened the second half on a 10-1 run. The last tie came at 36-36.
Knox led the Panthers with 12 points, all in the first half, and Krystina Reynolds added 10.
On Saturday, the Panthers earned a 64-59 overtime victory at Anna Maria. Neither team led by more than seven points throughout. 
Kaufman and Rachel Collins paced Middlebury with 15 points apiece. Knox chipped in with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists; Crews had eight rebounds and five assists; and Sabrina Weeks pulled down seven boards.
Middlebury scored four straight points to lead, 51-50, late in regulation, but Anna Maria forced overtime with a free throw at 0:13. The Panthers controlled OT, with a 13-8 edge. They overcame 26 turnovers by outscoring Anna Maria in the paint, 26-14, and in bench points, 28-10.
