Castillo wins to lead VUHS indoor track

BURLINGTON — Vergennes Union High School senior Chris Castillo won the Division II triple jump, classmate Sebby Crowell placed in two events, and a Commodore boys’ relay team finished second to highlight the efforts of VUHS athletes at a Jan. 3 indoor track at the University of Vermont.
Castillo’s leap of 38 feet, 2.75 inches won the triple jump, while Crowell was fifth at 55 meters (7.0) and sixth at 300 meters (40.5). Castillo also took sixth in the long jump (17’-1.75”), while Xavier Provencher added a sixth-place finish for the VUHS boys at 600 meters (1:55.5).
Castillo and Provencher also joined Evan Meyers and Chris Leach on the Commodore four-by-400-meter relay team that took second in 4:07.9.
Overall, the VUHS boys scored 23 points to finish eighth in a 16-team field. Thetford (91) and Champlain Valley (74) ran one-two.
Also scoring a strong finish was Mount Abraham’s Chris Carter, who was third in the boys’ 600 meters (1:41.4). Carter also finished 13th at 300 meters (42.2).
Leach also took 11th in the 55 (7.2) and 8th in the 300 (41.4), while Meyers was 18th at 55 meters (7.4).
For the VUHS girls, seniors Paige Stolen (fourth in the 600 in 1:57.4) and Ally Stearns (fourth in the shot put at 28’-8”) scored points; the Commodore girls were 13th with seven points. Windsor (75) and U-32 (72) led the girls’ competition.
Also competing for the VUHS girls was Alyse Beauchemin, who was 40th at 55 meters (9.1) and 27th in the 300 (57.5).
