VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Aug. 26 arrested a John Graham Shelter resident and cited him for aggravated domestic assault and unlawful restraint.

City police lodged Hamilton Smith, 21, from Rochester following the incident. They allege Smith choked his girlfriend, causing her pain and injury, and also locked her in a bathroom and refused to let her leave.

In other incidents between Aug. 25 and 31, Vergennes police:

•  On Aug. 25 went to a Graham Shelter apartment to check the welfare of a man who was reported to be drunk and threatening to harm himself; police discovered that he was OK and also found him another place to spend the night.

•  On Aug. 25 went to Ticonderoga, N.Y., to present details on the department’s K-9 program.

•  On Aug 25 responded to a First Street complaint that two men were removing belongings from a shed; police issued no-trespass orders to the men, one of whom was the complainant’s estranged husband, but said ownership of the items was a civil issue to be determined by family court.

•  On Aug. 25 determined a Walker Avenue resident who had not been seen recently was at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

•  On Aug. 26 issued court diversion paperwork for marijuana and alcohol possession to two youths in a car stopped for speeding on West Main Street.

•  On Aug. 28 responded to a report of a couple arguing at a Green Street home and discovered on arrival they were calm.

•  On Aug. 28 responded on behalf of VSP to a one-car accident on Hopkins Road in Panton at which people reported minor injuries.

•  On Aug. 29 dealt with a two-car accident at the intersection of Main and South Maple streets at which people reported minor injuries.

•  On Aug. 29 joined several other county law enforcement agencies in setting up a checkpoint on Panton Road at which VSP processed a driver for driving under the influence of alcohol, cited another driver for possession of marijuana, and issued many warnings.

•  On Aug. 29 issued court diversion paperwork to six Northlands students for either drinking or possessing alcohol as a minor.

•  On Aug. 29 checked a report of youths partying behind Vergennes Union Elementary School, but found no one.

•  On Aug. 30 determined the reported theft of a modem from a Hillside Acres apartment was instead a civil issue.

•  On Aug. 30 helped firefighters at a High Street blaze.

•  On Aug. 30 aided the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at the intersection of Booth Woods and Green Street.

•  On Aug. 30 began investigating an incident in which a driver at Champlain Farms spun his tires and left a patch of rubber about 150 feet long.

•  On Aug. 30 checked a report of youths at a campfire behind Northlands property off MacDonough Drive; police found soda bottles and tin foil, but no evidence of illegal activity.

•  On Aug. 30 dealt with a minor two-car accident on Main Street and ticketed one driver for violating a junior operator’s license by carrying a passenger.

•  On Aug. 31 looked into a report of people taking property from a New Haven Road outbuilding; on Tuesday police were still looking into whether it was theft or a civil issue.
