Panther runners qualify for NCAAs
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s cross-country team took second and the men were fifth at an NCAA Division III New England Regional hosted by Williams College on this past Saturday.
The Panther women earned an automatic bid to this coming Saturday’s national championship meet at Wilmington College in Ohio, while the men were awarded an at-large bid.
The women, ranked No. 3 in the country, came in at 105 points, trailing fourth-ranked MIT’s winning total of 40. The 12th-ranked men finished fifth with 136 points.
In the women’s 6-kilometer race, Panther Alison Maxwell took second in 21:48.9 out of 387 runners, while Summer Spillane was fourth in 21:54.2. Adrian Walsh posted a time of 22:17.2, good for 12th; Katie Carlson ran 22:27.7 for 16th place; and Erzie Nagy took 31st-place in 22:47.3.
Maxwell, a senior, was named NESCAC Women’s Runner of the Week.
For the men, Wilder Schaaf completed the 8K run in 25:40.9 for 10th place, while Kevin Wood was 14th in 25:42.7. Sebastian Matt finished 25th in 26:04.8, and also scoring for Middlebury were Jacob Fox in 37th (26:24.2) and Sam Cartwright in 50th (26:39.4).
