VUHS goes under the waves with ‘Mermaid’

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School will present its annual fall musical on Nov. 13-15 in the newly renovated VUHS auditorium. An ensemble cast of 50 VUHS students in grades 7-12 will sing and dance in “The Little Mermaid,” based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Show times are Thursday and Friday, Nov. 13 and 14, at 7 p.m., and on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m.
“The Little Mermaid” is one of Disney’s most celebrated films and musicals and is about Ariel, a free-spirited mermaid, played by April Ambrose, who dreams of a world above the sea, even though her father, King Triton, played by Glen Childers, has forbidden contact with humans. Ariel strikes up a bargain with the sneaky sea witch Ursula, played by Emma Gardner, to give up her beautiful voice to find love. Once King Triton realizes what his daughter has done, he approaches Ursula with a deal in order to save his daughter’s life.
Ariel embarks on a lifetime adventure and meets Prince Eric, played by Chris Castillo. With Sebastian and Flounder by her side, played by Max Ratti-Bicknell and Emily Rooney, respectively, Ariel will need courage and determination to set things right in both her worlds.
The stage musical is produced by Disney Theatrical and written by Doug Wright with music by Alan Menken. The show is directed by Bill Walsh and choreographed by Susan Walsh. They are aided by vocal director Karen Jordan, and producer/conductor Susan O’Daniel.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seating is reserved. Tickets will be available at the beginning of November at Linda’s Apparel in Vergennes and at the high school auditorium lobby Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m.-noon and evenings. Tickets are also available at the door.
