VSMA picks Middlebury’s Robinson for monthly honor

VERMONT — The Vermont Sports Media Association chose Middlebury Union High School football player Austin Robinson and Wallingford swimmer Bethany Bosch as its September Athletes of the Month.
In statewide balloting of VSMA members, Robinson was elected the Male Athlete of the Month, and Bosch was voted the Female Athlete of the Month. Each was first nominated by a VSMA member for his or her outstanding efforts during the month of September.
Robinson, a senior quarterback and safety, helped spark the Middlebury football team to a 5-0 start to their season. By the end of September, Robinson had rushed 37 times for 356 yards and five touchdowns, completed 17 of 28 passes for 334 yards and five more TDs, returned a punt 59 yards for another score, and taken an interception back 95 yards to account for a 12th TD.
Also nominated for the September male honor were three other football players, Otter Valley senior quarterback John Winslow, BFA-St. Albans senior Robert Kelly, and U-32 junior Colby Brochu.
Including Aug. 29, Winslow threw 13 touchdown passes and rushed for four touchdowns as OV went 3-1. In a 45-44 loss to Fair Haven, Winslow was 11-for 26 for 150 yards and two TDs passing and rushed for 130 yards and three TDs on 10 carries. Against BFA-Fairfax he threw for more than 300 yards and six TD passes and rushed for another. Vs. Mill River he tossed three TD passes, and vs. Milton he was 10-for-18 for 225 yards and two TDs and rushed for 63 yards.
Bosch, a 2002 graduate of Mill River Union, on Sept. 1 completed the remarkable feat of swimming across the English Channel. She did it in a little over 17 hours to become just the 465th female in history to accomplish the feat. Fewer people have swum the English Channel than have climbed Mount Everest.
Also nominated for the female honor were two soccer players, senior Dani Jesmonth of Williamstown and sophomore Bryn McClallen of Mount St. Joseph.
More information about the VSMA is available from organization president Josh Kaufmann of the St. Albans Messenger at [email protected].
