Otter football rolls to victory
BRANDON — The No. 1 Otter Valley Union High School football team ousted No. 8 Poultney on this past Saturday, 41-21, and will host No. 4 Windsor on Saturday in a Division III semifinal.
Junior running back Carson Leary rushed for 242 yards and three touchdowns. According to OV’s coaching staff, Leary on Saturday broke Peter Bautista’s 2009 single-season school rushing record of 1,345 yards.
Leary’s first score, a 7-yard run, came with three seconds left in the first quarter and was set up by quarterback John Winslow’s 17- and 39-yard completions.
OV made it 14-0 early in the second quarter on a 29-yard pass from Winslow to Josef Scarborough and a two-point conversion toss to Robertas Nielsen.
Adam Sherwin’s 5-yard touchdown run added to the OV lead, but Poultney’s Zack Constantine broke a 79-yard run in the third quarter to put his team on the board.
Leary and his blockers then put the game out of reach with 34- and 44-yard scoring runs, and Winslow added a scoring run in the fourth quarter. Constantine (153 yards on 16 carries) added 52- and 4-yard scoring runs in the fourth quarter for Poultney, which finished at 3-6.
The Otters, winners of seven straight, will take a 7-1 record into their game vs. Windsor. Windsor (6-2) thumped No. 5 U-32, 47-20 on Saturday. The Jacks and Otters did not meet during the regular season.
