Panther field hockey team posts two wins, including coach’s 300th

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team rolled to a pair of recent one-sided wins, including the 300th of Coach Katherine DeLorenzo’s coaching career.
DeLorenzo, who earlier this season won her 200th game at Middlebury, has a career head coaching record of 300-114-2. This season the Panthers are 13-1, 8-1 in NESCAC play, and are ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III. They will host Wesleyan on Saturday at 11 a.m.
On this past Saturday, the Panthers blanked visiting NESCAC foe Bates, 6-0.  The Bobcats, who start Mount Abraham Union High School graduate Sam Reiss, a freshman, on defense, dropped to 3-9, 0-8 in league play.
Jillian Green put the Panthers on the board in the 13th minute, converting a Catherine Fowler assist on a penalty corner. Just over 12 minutes later, Green scored on another corner, this time with a helper from Lauren Berestecky.
Middlebury made it 3-0 3:21 later when Fowler tipped in a shot by Olivia Jurkowitz following a penalty corner. About two minutes later, Berestecky knocked home a pass from Jurkowitz to make it 4-0.
In the second half, Anna Kenyon (from Pam Schulman) and Fowler padded the Middlebury lead. Middlebury finished with advantages of 25-3 in shots and 17-4 in penalty corners. Emily Knapp (three saves in 67:49) and Evangeline Dunphy (2:11) both saw action in goal for the Panthers. Two Bates goalies combined for 10 saves.
On Tuesday, the Panthers thumped visiting non-league foe Castleton, 13-0. Josie Trichka and Annie Leonard scored three goals apiece to lead Middlebury, while Jurkowitz and Fowler had two goals apiece. Schulman, Audrey Quirk and Caroline Knapp added a goal apiece. Emily Knapp (no saves) played the first half, while Dunphy made one second-half stop. Jess Galatioto made 15 saves for Castleton.
