Middlebury to host meeting on proposed skate park
MIDDLEBURY — Organizers of a proposed skate park at the Middlebury Recreation Park are inviting supporters to participate at a Saturday, Oct. 18, meeting at the Ilsley Library to advance planning for the new facility.
Tentative plans call for the new skate park to occupy a 100-foot-long-by-50-foot-wide spot just west of the basketball and tennis courts in the recreation park, off Mary Hogan Drive. Parks & Recreation Director Terri Arnold has said the facility could feature such amenities as poured concrete skating surfaces with moguls, inclines, declines and pyramids, along with a series of railings that are popular among skateboard enthusiasts. A BMX bike component could also be added to the plans, according to Arnold.
The Oct. 18 meeting will give supporters a chance to put their ideas on paper. Plans call for attendees to split up into working groups to map out such things as space designs, component designs, marketing plans, fundraising strategies and grant writing. The new skate park could cost between $75,000 and $100,000. The Middlebury Masons have already pledged $30,000 toward the endeavor.
Mary Hogan Elementary School directors have given encouragement to organizers and will weigh in on the project more fully when plans are further refined.
The Oct. 18 meeting will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Ilsley Library conference room.
