VERMONT — The Vermont Sports Media Association has chosen 16-year-old St. Albans swimmer Peter Mikheyev as its August Athlete of the Month.
Mikheyev outpolled six other nominees for the honor in statewide balloting of VSMA members. Each was first nominated by a VSMA member for his or her outstanding efforts in August.
Among the other nominees was Middlebury Union High School senior football player Cullen Hathaway. Hathaway was nominated after returning a kickoff 87 yards for one score and tossing a 36-yard halfback-option pass for another TD in the Tigers’ opening 41-29 victory at Essex.
Mikheyev, a member of the St. Albans Sharks swim team, was the star of the Vermont Swim Association Championships on Aug. 2 and 3 in White River Junction, setting state records in all four of his individual events. Mikheyev already held four 13- and 14-year-old state marks, and the four new 15- and 16-year-old records leave him with eight. Among his highlights was a 16-second rout of the field in the 200-yard freestyle.
Mikheyev outpolled 13-year-old Mendon golfer Logan Broyles, East Montpelier racecar driver Emily Packard, New Hampshire and Thunder Road racecar driver Derrick O’Donnell, Bennington semi-pro football player Will Cole, and 12-year-old Williston swimmer Kimberly Nguyen.
The August winner will receive a plaque from the VSMA’s sponsor of the Athlete of the Month program, Initial Ideas of Rutland.
