Opinion: McEathron is a strong candidate

Attending the recent candidate forum at the Middlebury Town Hall Theater, I was extremely impressed by Calvin McEathron’s vision for Vermont. He seemed to be the only candidate with original proposals to offer and I’m very encouraged that he recognizes the critical importance of working to keep young people and families from continuing to leave our state.
It’s widely known that Vermont has one of the highest median ages in the country, one of the lowest birthrates and low or negative net migration. The effects of these trends are felt in our economy, our school enrollments, our tax rates and our community life. Calvin’s perspective on economic development and its relation to our rising tax burden was clear and well thought out.
Additionally, I appreciated his plan on how to reform the Public Service Board process to increase public input. Calvin’s background in farming also gives him a valuable understanding of both our agricultural economy and the workings of a small business.
I would encourage all who didn’t attend the recent forum to view it online and assess for themselves the need for a change in Middlebury. Calvin is a well-balanced candidate who offers the energy, intelligence, creativity and longevity to make a positive impact on the direction and future of our beautiful state.
