Fall dirt track races start at Devil’s Bowl

WEST HAVEN — New York driver Kenny Tremont Jr. edged Brandon’s Vince Quenneville Jr. at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sept. 26 to win the 50-lap LawPower.com Slate Valley Showdown and the $1,000 winner’s prize in the opening round of the three-race “Battle at the Bowl” series — the first dirt-track race held at the Vermont track in more than five years.
Before a big crowd, both drivers survived an early portion of the race that saw half of the Sportsman Modified field eliminated in a series of multi-car pileups. Tremont and Quenneville dueled the rest of the way, but Tremont held the lead from lap 20 onward.
Robbie Williams of Campton, N.H., won $500 in the 25-lap Pro Stock/Limited Late Model open. It was his first Devil’s Bowl victory.
Ballston Spa, N.Y., driver Randy Miller won the 20-lap Renegade feature, and Rob Gioia of East Thetford drove to the win in the 15-lap Mini Stock feature in a Ford Mustang — the only rear-wheel drive car in the field.
The “Battle at the Bowl” series continues on Saturday at 4 p.m. with the 50-lap, $5,000-to-win “King of the Clay” race for Big Block and Small Block Modifieds. Sportsman Modifieds, Renegades, Mini Stocks, and a 50-lap Enduro are also on the card.
Local drivers’ results this past weekend were:
•  Sportsman Modified Feature (50 laps): 2. Quenneville; 15. Tim LaDuc, Orwell; 21. Justin Comes, Middlebury.
•  Pro Stock Feature (25 laps): 9. Fred Little, Salisbury.
•  Mini Stock Feature (15 laps): 6. Mitchell Dundon, Orwell; 7. Brian Bishop, Middlebury; 10. Chuck Bradford, Addison.
