In girls’ soccer, Tigers drop VUHS in overtime

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury edged Vergennes in overtime to highlight local girls’ soccer action in the latter half of last week.
In other action, the Tigers and Commodores each won on Saturday, while Mount Abraham won twice to reach .500.
MUHS VS. VUHS
On Wednesday, defender Claire Armstrong took aPayton Buxton feed 5:12 into overtime and connected from long range to give MUHS a 1-0 victory over the visiting Commodores. MUHS coach Wendy Leeds said an Abby Lane serve into the box helped set up the game-winner.
Tiger goalies Molly Campbell (one save) and Riley Fenster (four saves, one on a second-half breakaway) shared time. K.C. Ambrose stopped 11 shots in the VUHS net.
On Saturday, the host Tigers knocked off longtime nemesis Milton, 2-1, to improve to 3-0. Buxton scored with five seconds left in the first half after an Andi Boe corner kick, and Buxton made it 2-0 with 5:13 to go in the game. Milton broke through a minute later, but the Tiger defense allowed only one shot on goal all day and MUHS held on. Campbell stopped that shot in the first half, and Leeds said she and Fenster each came out to break up a half-dozen threats.
Also on Saturday, the Commodores defeated host Montpelier, 2-0, to even their record at 2-2. Olivia Fournier scored in the first half and Caroline Johnston added a second-half insurance goal for VUHS.
EAGLES
On Wednesday, the Eagles surrendered a first-half goal, but received scores from Lydia Pitts andJuniper Nardiello-Smith in the second half to overtake host U-32 (1-1) in a 2-1 victory.
On Saturday, the Eagles blanked visiting Fairfax, 2-0, as goalie Zoe Cassels-Brown worked a three-save shutout. Caroline McCardle’s unassisted strike midway through the first half gave Mount Abe the lead, and Isabel Brennan padded it with an assist from Ernesta McIntosh early in the second half. Two goalies combined for 10 saves for the 2-3 Bullets.
