Eagle football suffers first loss of season to Fairfax

BRISTOL — Visiting Fairfax defeated the Mount Abraham-Vergennes football team on Saturday, 20-8, a result that left both teams at 2-1 and in a six-way tie for second place in Division III.
The Eagles took an 8-0 lead with a 70-yard march on their opening possession, which was capped by a 15-yard Wyatt Gracie run. Anthony Warner ran in the conversion.
Fairfax made it 8-6 in the second quarter with a 60-yard drive that ended in a six-yard Liam Sweeney run. The Eagles then reached midfield on the ensuing possession, but Fairfax stopped them on a fourth-and-three play, and the Bullets moved for the go-ahead score from there, an 11-yard Sweeney run followed by a two-point conversion to make it 14-8.
Fairfax quarterback Cam Place added a 16-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to create the final score.
Sweeney (102 yards rushing) and Matt Larose (82 yards rushing) led the Fairfax attack. Gracie led the Eagles with 62 yards on the ground. Fairfax held the Eagles to 54 yards in the second half.
Mount Abe will look to bounce back at D-II Spaulding (0-3) this Saturday.
