Talk to focus on women’s shelter in India
BRISTOL — Sister Lucy Kurien, founder and director of Maher, will give a free talk at the WalkOver Gallery this Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. Chai and cookies will be served.
Maher is an NGO based in Pune, India, serving four Indian states. Maher’s primary purpose is to provide shelter and care to women in crisis. Maher also has children’s homes, homes for women with disabilities, homes for elderly women, and a home for men with physical and mental disabilities.
Maher is interfaith, caste-free and staffed by locals. The organization serves over 1,000 people and hundreds of communities in India.
Kurien founded Maher in 1997. She is a leading humanitarian activist who has much to teach about eradicating poverty using grassroots techniques.
