Middlebury Police Log: Texting driver issued a ticket
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on July 18 at 3:57 p.m. received a report from a resident that the driver of a vehicle on Court Street was possibly impaired. When the officer contacted the driver, he admitted to texting while driving. The officer issued the driver a ticket for doing so.
Between July 14 and 21, Middlebury police dealt with a variety of incidents including noise disturbances, welfare checks and many traffic stops.
In other activity last week, police:
• On July 14 at 11:30 a.m. responded to an accident involving a car and a motorcycle in the Maplefields parking lot on North Pleasant Street. The operator of the motorcycle sustained minor injuries.
• On July 14 investigated a report of lottery tickets missing at Mac’s Market, which had disappeared during an employee’s shift on June 27 and 28.
• On July 14 at 5:39 p.m. investigated a possible fight between two males on Lucius Shaw Lane. The altercation was determined to have been a verbal dispute only.
• On July 14 at 4 p.m. were notified that an off-duty officer noticed an infant left unattended in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op. Police spoke with a parent and notified the Department of Children and Families.
• On July 14 at 10:40 p.m. received a report of a person possibly struck by a car on North Pleasant Street. Police determined that the driver attempted to stop his vehicle from rolling down his driveway, and injured his ankle in the process.
• On July 15 at 10:51 a.m. received a report of a truck fire by the Waybury Inn. Police ascertained it was a mechanical malfunction of a pump on the truck. There was no fire.
• On July 15 at 10:26 a.m. received a report of a male sleeping on the town green. Police contacted the male who said he was hitchhiking to Burlington and had gotten tired.
• On July 15 at 11:43 a.m. received a report of persons engaged in sexual activity in a vehicle parked on East Main Street. The vehicle occupants were contacted, and they left the area.
• On July 15 at 5:06 p.m. contacted four juvenile females walking alone on the railroad tracks and contacted a parent about concern for their safety.
• On July 15 at 6:05 p.m. attempted to calm an ongoing dispute between Seymour Street neighbors.
• On July 15 at 6:32 p.m. took into protective custody a Burlington woman who had a blood alcohol content of 0.281 percent after she became disruptive and combative at a child’s birthday party on Seminary Street. For the sake of comparison, the legal blood alcohol limit for driving is 0.08 percent. The woman was transported to the Grace House in Rutland and accepted as an incapacitated person.
• On July 15 at 7:18 p.m. received a report of a juvenile harassing a neighbor on Otterside Court.
• On July 15 at 10:02 p.m. received a complaint of fireworks or gunshots heard by a King’s Row resident. Upon arrival, no noise was heard. Police were unable to determine the source of the noise.
• On July 16 at 6:27 p.m. assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a female who had fallen down a flight of stairs on Main Street.
• On July 16 at 8:57 p.m. assisted Emergency Medical Services with a heroin overdose on Creek Road.
• On July 17 at 8:59 p.m. investigated a report of an intoxicated couple sitting at the entrance of a Washington Street restaurant. Upon police arrival, the couple had left the area.
• On July 18 police received a report that an unknown person or vehicle had knocked down the business sign for Maple Landmark on Exchange Street.
• On July 18 at 8:08 p.m. investigated a report of a domestic disturbance that occurred during an exchange of custody of the couple’s children on Nashua Lane. Police said they found that there was no harm to either party, but there was property damage to a vehicle, which is being investigated for possible criminal charges.
• On July 18 at 7 p.m. went to a Middlebury residence for a welfare check on a four-year-old boy at his father’s request. Upon meeting with the mother and the boy, it appeared the boy was in good health and spirits.
• On July 18 at 10:42 p.m. received a report of an assault at the Aurora School. The altercation allegedly involved juveniles. The case was forwarded to the state’s attorney’s office for review.
• On July 19 at 2:45 p.m. met with North Pleasant Street neighbors about a dispute over property damage involving flowers and a garden. An officer spoke with the landlord who said one of the tenants was clearing overgrowth around the property, with his permission. It was suggested and agreed upon that the other tenants leave the lawn area alone.
• On July 19 took in a credit card that was found on Plains Road in Salisbury. Unable to get a hold of the card owner, police checked the card into evidence.
• On July 20 at 6:05 a.m. came across a herd of loose cows on Quarry Road. The officer contacted the farmer, and the cows were returned to the pasture.
• On July 20 at 6:49 p.m. checked on the welfare of a male walking from Bristol to Porter Hospital. Officers located the male on Route 116 in Bristol and the Bristol Rescue Squad transported him to Porter Hospital for a medical issue.
• On July 20 at 10:08 p.m. received a report of a fight between four to five juveniles. Police determined that a damaged laptop and stolen PlayStation gaming system were the cause of the trouble. Further investigation is under way.
• On July 20 at 10:32 p.m. received a complaint about loud music coming from a house on Lower Plains Road. Police contacted the occupant who said that he would keep the noise down.
• On July 21 at 8:13 a.m. responded to a report of a young boy wandering in the street near the Pulp Mill Bridge. Police located the mother and made a referral to DCF.
