Vergennes Champs swim past Middlebury Panthers in dual swim meet
VERGENNES — The host Vergennes Champs swim team used its depth to overcome the Middlebury Panthers on Thursday, 267-212, in Champlain Valley Swim League action. The result left both teams with 1-1 records.
The Champs won 10 of 14 relays, none of which were contested, to rack up a 98-28 advantage in those events, enough to overcome the Panthers’ slight edge in individual races at the Vergennes city pool.
Helping Middlebury to earn that edge were two athletes who swept their four age-group races, under-10 swimmer Thomas Denton and under-18 swimmer Nick Merrill.
Two Panthers also won three events each. Annie Bolton prevailed in the U-14 girls’ butterfly, backstroke and freestyle, and sister Reubie Bolton took the U-18 butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle.
Matching that feat for the champs was U-10 swimmer Anna Rakowski, who finished first in the girl’s backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.
Two Champs also won twice: Noah Konczal in the U-8 boys’ breaststroke and butterfly, and Emerson Rice in the U-8 girls’ backstroke and freestyle.
Middlebury’s Ellie Ross touched first in the girls’ U-12 butterfly and breaststroke.
