VERGENNES — Vergennes police cited the same Panton man twice last week for assault, lodging him the second time after receiving help from Bristol police in arresting him.
On Thursday, June 12, Vergennes police cited Douglas Shaw, 43, of Panton for simple assault. Police allege that at a Hillside Acres apartment Shaw grabbed a woman by the hair, banged her head against a cabinet, dragged her, and punched her in the face. Police said a judge released him on conditions.
On Saturday the 14th, city police cited Shaw again, this time for aggravated assault, plus careless and negligent operation of a motor vehicle and violating conditions of his release.
Police allege that Shaw, again at Hillside Acres, attacked two women with a baseball bat, and then drove off while they were trying to hang onto his vehicle. He left before city police arrived, and they sought help in finding him. Bristol police then pulled him over on Route 17 in Addison, according to Vergennes police, and returned him to the scene. Vergennes police then lodged him at the Chittenden County Correctional Center for lack of $50,000 bail.
Police said the Vergennes Area and Charlotte rescue squads took the women to Porter Hospital for treatment. One complained of injuries to a forearm and ankle, and the other of an injury to her neck, police said, and both suffered cuts and bruises in the incident. On Sunday, one of the women called VARS and police because she was experiencing head pain and dizziness.
In other incidents between June 9 and 15, Vergennes police:
•  On June 9 backed up Vermont State Police at a domestic dispute on Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh.
•  On June 9 heard from a social service agency about an ongoing issue with a client’s boyfriend making threats.
•  On June 9 went with VARS to a West Main Street residence. Police said they had to break into the home so that VARS could help a woman, whom they took to Porter Hospital.
•  On June 9 began investigating the possible sexual assault of a minor at a Main Street residence.
•  On June 9 received a tip about illegal drug activity in the area.
•  On June 10 checked the welfare of a man at a First Street residence; he was found to be OK.
•  On June 10 responded to a North Green Street incident in which a roofing screw was used to puncture a tire.
•  On June 10 served dog warrants on behalf of city officials.
•  On June 10 dealt with a noise complaint at a North Green Street apartment building.
•  On June 11 handled a dog-bite complaint on Bowman Road.
•  On June 11 heard of a fraud complaint in which someone posing as a Green Mountain Power representative threatened a power shutoff if a phone payment was not made.
•  On June 11 checked out a report of a substance that looked like blood on a West Street kitchen floor, but found no evidence of entry or possible origin of the red fluid.
•  On June 12 escorted representatives from the Department of Children and Families to look at a Main Street apartment that had been reported as unsuitable for children.
•  On June 12 stood by while a man retrieved belongings from a First Street home.
•  On June 12 checked the welfare of an infant at a Green Street residence; the child was found to be fine.
•  On June 13 escorted home two youths hanging out behind Vergennes Union Elementary School at 2:30 a.m.
•  On June 13 handled a two-car accident at the intersection of Main Street and MacDonough Drive; one driver was ticketed.
•  On June 13 calmed an arguing couple at a Hillside Acres apartment.
•  On June 13 responded along with VARS to a report of a drunken student at Northlands Job Corps. VARS took the student, who was described as passed out, to Porter Hospital.
•  On June 13 checked the welfare of a woman at a First Street residence; she was found to be fine.
•  On June 13 cited Mark Kennedy, 28, of Weybridge for driving with a suspended license, criminal offense, following a Panton Road traffic stop.
•  On June 14 helped Burlington police break up a fight, an action taken by one officer while off duty.
•  On June 15 helped VSP with the driving with a criminally suspended license case on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh.
•  On June 15 looked into two car break-ins on Mountain View Lane. Police said $20 was taken from one of the cars, which was not locked.
•  On June 15 dealt with a barking dog complaint on Meadow Lane.
