MUHS wins hilight D-II track & field meet

FAIR HAVEN — First-place finishes by Middlebury Union High School senior Max Moulton and sophomore Hannah Buttolph highlighted local athletes’ efforts at Saturday’s Division II championship track and field meet, which was hosted by Fair Haven Union High School.
Moulton won the boy’s 800-meter run in 1:59.81, in the process reclaiming the title he won as a sophomore, while Buttolph claimed the girls’ high jump title at a height of five feet, three inches.
Buttolph’s result was not only an MUHS school record, but was also three inches better that her closest D-II competitor and an inch better than the next best jump in all four divisions.
Also scoring well for MUHS was senior Nathan Peck, who was second in the boys’ 100 meters and third at 200; senior Jakob Trautwein, third in both the boys’ discus and javelin and fifth in the shot put; and junior sprinter Katherine Townsend, who was third in the girls’ 200 and fourth in the 100.
The Tiger boys’ four-by-400 meter relay team of Peck, Wyatt Norris, Naina Horning and Moulton took second, as did the girls’ 4×400 team of Buttolph, Townsend, Kiana Plouffe and Julia Vorsteveld.
The Tiger boys scored the best team finish among local high schools, taking fifth. U-32 won the boys’ competition, with Fair Haven in second. Vergennes was eighth, and Mount Abraham — which fielded a team without many seniors due to a conflict with the school’s graduation, finished 12th.
The Tiger girls were also fifth, although they scored fewer points. Harwood edged U-32 for the girls’ title. VUHS was 11th, and the Eagle girls were 12th.
Leading the VUHS boys were juniors Liam Godfrey and Chris Castillo, who were second in the 400 and the triple jump, respectively. Castillo also joined Jake Dombek, Jordan Stearns and Sebby Crowell on the Commodores’ second-place 4×100 relay team.
Senior Alix Kauffman and junior Paige Stolen picked up individual points for the VUHS girls in running events, and both also ran along with seniors Samara Sausville and Ruby Dombek on the Commodores’ fourth-place 4×400 relay team. Junior thrower Ally Stearns also scored for VUHS.
Junior Nick Turner picked up points for the Eagle boys by taking third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump, while freshman Sofia Wolak led the Eagle girls by taking a fourth and a sixth in the hurdling events, with sophomore Amelia Bruhl chipping in a fifth in the high jump.
