MUHS names valedictorians, salutatorian

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School announces that its 2014 co-valedictorians will be Sonia Howlett and Maxon “Max” Moulton, and its salutatorian, Nikolas “Nik” Shashok.
Sonia Howlett is the daughter of Brian and Sigrid Howlett of Cornwall. She has achieved high honors at MUHS, earning the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence in grades 10 and 11, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Sonia was the recipient of the Wellesley College Book Award and the Society of Women Engineers Highest Honor in grade 11. She was awarded the UVM Green and Gold Scholarship last summer and was recently named a National Merit Scholarship receipient. She was selected to attend the Governor’s Institute for Engineering. Sonia also received the Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction Award for achievement in AP courses in French, English, biology, calculus I and II, and U.S. history. She received American Legion Department Awards for science and social studies in grade 10 and for English, math, science and social studies in grade 11. In 2012, Sonia was the recipient of the special French Book Award. She scored in the top 10 percent on the UVM Math Contest in 2012 and 2013 and the highest score at MUHS on the American Mathematics Competitions.
Sonia has competed on the tennis and basketball teams. She is a member of the Concert Choir and Model U.N. and is a Peer Leader. She was the recipient of the St. Michael’s Book Award for community service in grade 11. She is the Prudential Spirit of Community Award Distinguished Finalist for Vermont, as well as a recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
Sonia will continue her education at Princeton University.
Max Moulton is the son of Serena Guiles and Jim Moulton of Middlebury. He has achieved High Honors all four years and earned the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence in grades nine, 10 and 11. Max received the Williams College Book Award and the Spanish Book Award in grade 11. He was the recipient of the American Legion Department Awards for English and fine arts in grade 9; world languages in grade 10; and physical education in grade 11. Max is a member of the National Honor Society and is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. He was selected to attend HOBY in grade 10 and Green Mountain Boys’ State in grade 11. Max scored in the top 10 percent on the UVM Math Contest in grades 10 and 11.
He was the captain of the cross-country team and the regional champion in grades 11 and 12. He is the captain of the track team, earning the 800 meters Vermont State Championship in grade 10 and the 4×800 relay team Vermont State Championship in grades 10 and 11. He has competed in soccer and qualified for the J2 with the Nordic ski team in grade 10. He was selected to attend the Vermont State Athletic Directors’ Association Leadership Conference in grade 11.
Max plays saxophone for the Concert Band and the Jazz Band. He was selected to play in the Green Mountain District Concert Band in grades 10, 11 and 12; the Green Mountain District Jazz Band in grade 12; and the All-State Band in grades 11 and 12. Max is currently the Student Senate president. He is one of the four Peer Leader Coordinators. He competed in the Scholars’ Bowl and was a member of the Prom Committee. Max’s volunteer efforts include coaching the Special Olympics track team.
Max will attend Harvard University.
Nik Shashok is the son of Alan and Susan Shashok of East Middlebury. He has achieved High Honors for most of his high school years and earned the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence in grades 9 and 11. Nik received the American Legion Department Award for world languages in grade nine and Honorable Mention for math in grade 9 and English in grade 11. Nik has played trumpet for the MUHS Concert Band all four years and the Jazz Band since grade 10. He was the recipient of the Director’s Award for the Concert Band in grade 11. Nik was selected for the Green Mountain District Music Festival Concert Band in grades 10, 11 and 12 and for the Green Mountain District Jazz Band in grades 11 and 12. He was selected to play in the All-State Concert Band in grade 11 and the All-State Jazz Band in grade 12. He was also selected for the National Honors Band and performed last October in Nashville, Tenn.
Nik has been a member of the Design and Build Engineering Club, and his team placed second for “fastest delivery” at the UVM competition for a giant crossbow. Nik played the role of the guard in the senior play, “The Wizard of Oz.” He has volunteered for several community service projects ranging from managing the East Middlebury sign board to coaching.
Nik will attend Tufts University.
Middlebury Union High School’s 2014 commencement will be held at the Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury on Saturday, June 14, at 10 a.m.
