Stone takes first 2014 N.Y. victory
SOUTH PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Defending Ernie’s Tools 358-Modified champion Todd Stone of Middlebury scored his first 2014 Airborne Speedway win on Saturday. Stone started on the pole and drove to his 13th career Airborne victory.
Stone powered past Pat McGrail for the lead in the G. Stone Motors 1x on lap three. He chose the outside lane on the race’s only restart and never gave up the top spot.
Stone said he feels he is beginning to get into the groove.
“We started off the season a little slow,” Stone said. “Now, we’re getting going. It’s a mental game. People don’t think that racing is a mental game, but it is a mental game. It’s nice to get the win and get it behind me. Now, I can focus on moving forward.”
McGrail finished 2nd, followed by Jessey Mueller, Chris Cayea and Leon Gonyo.
Bristol’s Josh Masterson also picked up an Airborne win on Saturday, in one of two Ground Round Late Model Twin 20s. Masterson prevailed after a race-long door-to-door battle with rookie Josh LeClaire.
