Tiger tennis teams fall in D-1 playoffs

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School tennis teams both bowed out of the Division I tournament late last week.
The six-seeded Tiger girls team fell in straight sets to No. 3 CVU in the quarter-final round on Thursday. Middlebury girls’ tennis ended the season with a 9-5 record.
The Tiger boys, seeded 13th, lost, 6-1, to No. 4 Rutland in their first round game this past Wednesday.
The bright spot for MUHS came at No. 1 doubles, where Nick Holmes and Eric Podraza prevailed, 6-4, 6-4.
The Tiger boys finished 5-7.
The match scores from last week were as follows:
TIGER GIRLS
The Tiger girls dropped to 10-6 on the road Thursday, losing to CVU, 0-7.
•  At No. 1 singles, Marvie Avery, M, lost to Kathy Joseph, 0-6, 0-6.
•  At No. 2 singles, Madeline Ganey, M, lost to Leah Epstein, 0-6, 3-6.
•  At No. 3 singles, Sonia Howlett, M., lost to MacKenzie Buckman, 7-5, 2-6, 5-10.
•  At No. 4 singles, Julia Cluss, M., lost to Elyse Killkelley, 0-6, 0-6.
•  At No. 5 singles, Sara Boe, M, lost to Isabelle Angstman, 2-6, 4-6.
•  At. No. 1 doubles, Jesse Wulfman and Lindsay Wells, M, lost to Mackenzie Kingston and Maia Bertrand, 0-6, 3-6.
•  At No. 2 doubles, Dorothy Punderson and Hannah Stoll, M, lost to Erika Barth and Sara Erickson, 2-6, 2-6.
TIGER BOYS
On Wednesday, the Tiger Boys lost on the road to Rutland, 1-6. The No. 4 Raiders swept the singles and will host Essex Friday at 3 p.m.
•  At No. 1 singles, Elliott Abbott, M, lost to Peter Gibb, 5-7, 3-6.
•  At No. 2 singles, Bo Tran, M, lost to Patrick Salisbury-Jennings, 3-6, 2-6.
•  At No. 3 singles, Jon McCluskey lost to Alvaro Lopez, 0-6, 1-6.
•  At No. 4 singles, Bob Avery, M, lost to Jake Piatek, 2-6, 2-6.
•  At No. 5 singles, Jerry Staret, M, lost to Dalton Eckhardt, 2-6, 1-6.
•  At No. 1 doubles, Nick Holmes and Eric Podraza, M, beat Patrick O’Rourke and Jack Foley, 6-4, 6-4.
•  At No. 2 doubles, Ben Silver and Max Mayone, M, lost to Nick Boles and Julian Marcell, 4-6, 4-6.
