OV leads local baseball teams into post-season

ADDISON COUNTY — All three local high school teams played against Division I teams in local high school baseball action in the latter part of last week, but two of those local teams are in Division II.
Otter Valley was the only winner, D-I Middlebury lost in its final regular season game, and Mount Abe lost twice, including a narrow loss to the top-ranked team in D-I.
The Vermont Principals Association was set to announce playoff pairings early on Monday.
OTTERS
Otter Valley ended up in seventh place in D-II with a 9-7 record (only three of those losses to D-II teams) after beating visiting Hartford on Friday, 3-2.
OV pitcher Will Claessens threw a five-hit, complete game over Hartford. He also tapped out two hits and an RBI.
The Otters earned an early lead with two runs on three hits in the first. Mike Winslow also had two hits on the day.
TIGERS
Middlebury enters the playoffs with a 7-8 record (11th in D-I) after finishing up with a 9-4 loss at home to South Burlington. Aaron Smith got on base with two singles.
EAGLES
This past Wednesday, Mount Abe took the long trip to Newport only to experience an 11-0 drubbing at the hands of host North Country. The Eagles managed just two hits, compared to the Falcons’ 12. Austin Lafayette’s double was a bright spot for Mount Abe; pitcher Josh Cyr recorded the loss.
The Eagles found a little more success the next day, when they hosted BFA-St. Albans and staged a tight battle with the 12-2 Bobwhites. Mount Abe’s Mike Jerome gave up only one earned run on five hits, and Sawyer Kamman managed a triple.
But St. Albans’ Ryan Connor struck out 13 and gave up only four hits in seven innings.
The Eagles’ record is 4-11, and they were in 10th place in the rankings on the VPA website over the weekend.
