Tennis teams wrapping season

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ and boys’ tennis teams wrapped up their regular seasons earlier this week, while the Otter Valley girls lost at Rutland. The Otters are scheduled to host Bellows Falls on Thursday in search of their first win.
The Tiger girls lost at Montpelier on Monday, 7-0, but won at U-32 on Tuesday, 6-1, to finish at 9-5.
The Tiger boys split two close matches at home, edging Montpelier on Monday, 4-3, and falling to U-32 on Tuesday by the same score to finish regular season play at 5-6.
Individual tournament play is set to begin this Thursday, and the teams will compete in the Division I tournament next week. Seeds will be announced later this week.
On Monday, host Montpelier defeated the Tiger girls, 7-0, although many of the individual matches were competitive. One highlight was a matchup of undefeated players in No. 1 singles, with the Solons’ Caitlyn Bashara outlasting the Tigers’ Marvie Avery.
•  At No. 1 singles, Bashara (Mont), defeated Avery (M),6-4, 6-3.
•  At No. 2 singles, Chloe Golonka (Mont), defeated Madeline Ganey (M), 6-2, 6-1.
•  At No. 3 singles, Julie Connor (Mont), defeated Sonia Howlett (M), 6-3, 6-3.
•  At No. 4 singles,Maddie Dunn (Mont), defeated Dorothy Punderson (M), 2-6, 6-0, 10-4.
•  At No. 5 singles, Mikaela Moore (Mont), defeated Hannah Stoll (M), 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
•  At No. 1 doubles, Alyssa Barrett and Emily Bashara (Mont), defeated Jesse Wulfman and Julia Cluss (M), 6-2, 6-2.
•  At No. 2 doubles,Anna Hamilton and Marta Fernandez (Mont), defeated Sara Boe and Lindsay Wells (M), 6-2, 6-3.
In Tuesday’s win vs. U-32:
•  At No. 1 singles, Avery, M, defeated Signe Goddard, U, 6-4, 6-3.
•  At No. 2 singles, Ganey, M, lost to Emily George, 6-7, 6-2 (6-10).
•  At No. 3 singles, Howlett, M, beat Allie Belliveau, U, 6-2, 6-1.
•  At No. 4 singles, Boe, M, defeated Nell Peterson, U, 7-5, 6-2.
•  At No. 5 singles, Wells, M, beat Emiri Maruyama, U, 6-0, 2-6 (10-6).
•  At No. 1 doubles, Wulfman and Cluss defeated Anna Valenti and Sophie Warner, 6-0, 6-1.
•  At No. 2 doubles, Punderson and Charlotte Keathley, M, defeated Sam Hunt and Liza Hickory, score unavailable.
On Monday, the Tiger boys edged visiting Montpelier, 4-3, splitting six contested matches and picking up a forfeit at No. 5 singles.
•  At No. 1 singles, Elliott Abbott (M), defeated Fred Bashara (Mont), 6-0, 6-0.
•  At No. 2 singles, Joe Parento (Mont), defeated Marcello Hanta-Davis (M), 6-2, 6-2.
•  At No. 3 singles, Kevin Schlott (Mont), defeated Jon McCluskey (M), 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7).
•  At No. 4 singles, Bob Avery (M), defeated Tyler Glass (Mont), 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).
•  At No. 1 doubles, Nick Holmes and Eric Podraza (M), defeated Ben Field and Karyka Taylor (Mont), 6-0, 6-1.
•  At No. 2 doubles, Seth Herz and Owen Koucky (Mont), defeated Ben Silver and Tom Crowne (M), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Many of the individual matches vs. U-32 on Tuesday were tightly contested:
•  At No. 1 singles, Abbott (M), defeated Ethan Fielder (U), 6-2, 6-0.
•  At No. 2 singles, Hanta-Davis (M), defeated Aaron Thompson (U), 7-5, 6-4.
•  At No. 3 singles, Chris Alderghetti (U), defeated McCluskey (M), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
•  At No. 4 singles, Nick Grace (U), defeated Avery (M), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
•  At No. 5 singles, Corey Kline (U), defeated Jerry Staret (M), 6-3, 7-5.
•  At No. 1 doubles, Nick Holmes and Eric Podraza (M), defeated Jordan Moore and Jacob Toro (U), 7-5, 6-0.
•  At No. 2 doubles, Zach Elmore and Ben Ehert (U), defeated Silver and Jon Quesnel (M), 6-3, 6-4.
On Monday, Division I Rutland blanked the D-II Otter girls, 7-0, including a forfeit at second doubles.
•  At No. 1 singles, Caitlin Hanley (R), defeated Sarah Young (OV), 6-0, 6-0.
•  At No. 2 singles, Kristen Switzer (R), defeated Danarose Weaver (OV), 6-1, 6-0.
•  At No. 3 singles, Melanie Hubbard (R), defeated Caitlyn Curtis (OV), 6-1, 6-1.
•  At No. 4 singles, Megan Nader (R), defeated Gabrielle Welch (OV), 6-1, 6-1
•  At No. 5 singles, Sarah Nadler (R), defeated Jonna Keith (OV), 6-1, 6-1.
•  At No. 1 doubles, Amber Thomas and Kelsey Bullock (R), defeated Brenna Coombs and Brigid Enright (OV), 6-2, 6-2.
