New Haven fills town positions
NEW HAVEN — The New Haven selectboard at its April 1 meeting appointed a slew of residents to town positions.
The selectboard unanimously made the following appointments: Rick Shappy, town energy coordinator; Earl Bessette, John McKinley and Paul Audy as fence viewers; Phyllis Smith, representative to the Addison County Solid Waste District; Richard Higbee, inspector of lumber, shingles and wood and weigher of coal; Michaela Granstrom as library trustee; and Dave Wetmore, 911 coordinator.
The board also approved liquor licenses for Tourterelle Restaurant and Inn and for Green Pasture Meats — both Route 7 businesses.
Also at that meeting, New Haven Volunteer Fire Department Chief Alan Mayer and assistant chiefs Dean Gilmore and Mark Livingston spoke with the selectboard about a variety of issues.
The firemen said that because there is very low clearance when fire trucks exit the garage of the firehouse, it is imperative that the Highway Department clear snow from in front of the bays, especially when it falls off the roof.
The firemen also alerted the selectboard about a flooding problem as a result of snowmelt, which seeps into a storage closet in the back of the firehouse. The selectboard dispatched Harold Tricou, the town handyman, to look into it.
Mayer discussed merging New Haven First Response with the fire department, noting that the membership of First Response has dwindled to just six people, and that it would make sense for the fire department to absorb the organization. A decision was not made at the meeting, and the issue will be taken up in the future.
