Softball: VUHS, Otters win; MAU, MUHS lose
ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes Union High School softball team finally hit the field and won twice to highlight area action earlier this week. In other games, Mount Abraham suffered its first loss, Otter Valley won on the road, and Middlebury came up short at home.
VUHS
On Monday, the Commodores cruised to a 15-0, five-inning win over visiting Champlain Valley (0-4). Tamara Aunchman paced the attack with three hits, including a grand slam and a two-run single. Taylor Paquette added a pair of hits and three RBIs, and Emilee Trudo earned the pitching win.
Although the Commodores had picked up an early forfeit win over Winooski, they saw two games postponed last week, one to weather and one because Burlington requested a postponement because the Seahorses lacked enough players to field a team. Monday’s game was the first for the Commodores this spring.
On Tuesday, the Commodores rallied for seven runs in the seventh to knock off host Colchester, 10-5, and improve to 3-0. Kayla Charron led the VUHS offense with three hits and a walk, Trudo earned the pitching win and also doubled, and Natalie Salley tripled for VUHS.
EAGLES
On Tuesday, host Essex (5-0) scored all of its runs in the third inning off losing pitcher Rachael McCormick and edged the Eagles 3-1. Mount Abe (3-1) suffered its first loss despite McCormick allowing just six hits in six innings and getting a two-hit performance from Madi Wood.
OTTERS
OV won its third straight and moved over .500 at 3-2 by blanking host Springfield on Tuesday, 7-0. Taylor Aines tossed a complete-game three-hitter, walking two and fanning four, and shortstop Cortney Poljacik homered for the second straight contest, this one a three-run shot.
Aines also tripled and she and Megan Santell scored the go-ahead runs in the sixth on a Laura Beth Roberts single. Brittany Bushey also singled home two runs in the sixth. In the seventh, Bushey and Santell singled to set the table for Poljacik’s blast, her third hit of the game.
TIGERS
Also on Tuesday, Mount Mansfield got a go-ahead three-run homer from winning pitcher Sydney LeBourveau in the fourth inning and went on to a 9-6 victory at MUHS.
The Tigers (1-2) banged out 11 hits off LeBourveau, including two apiece from Carsyn Buxton andKrisandra Provencher. Payton Buxton struck out five batters in relief, but took the loss for the 1-2 Tigers.
