Opinion: Voters should affirm support of town office project

In light of the fact that we, the taxpayers of Middlebury, are faced with a re-vote on Article 1 (previous Article 6), I am adding my name to the list of those who staunchly support this article. We have discussed and debated this issue regarding the municipal building and gym for well over 25 years. The offer that Middlebury College has presented is both financially generous as well as a fiscally sound investment for this community.
While people on both sides of this issue have presented a multitude of viewpoints, the reality is if we do not have the college’s financial assistance, this community simply can’t afford to put another financial burden on the backs of Middlebury residents who already are paying exorbitant property taxes. If this article fails, then do we, the community of Middlebury, discuss and debate this issue again for the next quarter century?
We have the opportunity to vote on this important issue one more time. I urge the residents of Middlebury to attend the special town meeting which will be held on Monday, May 12, at 7 p.m. and then vote by Australian ballot on Tuesday May 13.
