VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Monday said an allegation made early last week of embezzlement at the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union office remains under investigation.
Police Chief George Merkel said on Monday police were called to look into the issue on March 24, and the amount alleged to be involved is “$10,000 or more.” Merkel said he could offer no more specifics during an investigation.
On Friday, Merkel recharacterized the missing money as a theft by someone outside the ANwSU office.
In other incidents between March 24 and 30, Vergennes police:
•  On March 24 returned a truant middle school student to Vergennes Union High School.
•  On March 24 began investigating the theft of a purse at VUHS.
•  On March 24 and 25 helped Vermont State Police by handling two accidents on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh, one on the 25th at the intersection with Monkton Road and one the day before further north.
•  On March 25 during a traffic detail on Panton Road warned four truck drivers for overweight vehicles and ticketed a fifth for that offense, and issued speeding tickets, two citations for driving with a suspended license and one for driving an unregistered car.
•  On March 25 searched Short Street unsuccessfully for a man reported to be going through mailboxes.
•  On March 26 took a report of a car parked on Sunset Drive being entered, although nothing was taken.
•  On March 26 responded along with the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to a reported suicide attempt on Panton Road.
•  At a March 27 speeding stop cited Johnathan Nesbitt, 22, of Newark, N.J., for marijuana possession.
•  On March 27 met with Vergennes Union Elementary School staff about a behavioral issue.
•  On March 27 provided records to WomenSafe.
•  On March 27 looked into a possible Craigslist check-cashing scam, an action taken on behalf of a Main Street resident.
•  On March 27 ticketed a Northlands Job Corps student for smoking marijuana and issued him court diversion paperwork for underage alcohol consumption.
•  On March 27 cited Bryan Eusom, 49, of Bronx, N.Y., for operating a commercial vehicle with a suspended license.
•  On March 28 helped VARS lift a patient on Panton Road.
•  On March 28 took a report of a minor two-car accident on Green Street.
•  On March 28 were told a motorist had driven away from a gas station with a gas nozzle still in the car’s gas tank; police said he returned the nozzle but could still face charges.
•  On March 29 cited Northlands student James Streeter, 21, of New Haven, Conn., for furnishing alcohol to a minor, and cited Christina Delly, 20, of Peabody, Mass., for providing false information to a police officer and issued her court diversion paperwork for underage drinking.
•  At a March 29 traffic stop cited Shawn Place and Jacob Sanderson, both 22 of Colchester, for possession of marijuana; Sanderson was also ticketed for speeding.
•  On March 29 responded to a White Street noise complaint.
•  On March 29 handled a VUHS parking issue.
•  On March 29 heard from a Second Street resident that she was not happy with how long her boyfriend had kept her car or how muddy it was when he returned it.
•  On March 30 backed up Bristol police and VSP at an armed robbery on Route 116 in Bristol.
•  On March 30 issued court diversion paperwork for underage drinking to a Northlands student.
•  On March 30 looked into an allegation that a no-trespass order had been violated at a Main Street apartment building, but learned no such order was in effect.
