Middlebury baseball ends spring trip with 2-8 record

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College baseball team posted a 2-8 record during its annual spring break trip to Tucson, Ariz. The final three games of the trip were NESCAC West games against Williams, and the Ephs came out with the three-game sweep. The Panthers’ Wednesday game at Plattsburgh was postponed.
At the plate, senior Alex Kelly leads the Panthers with a .422 batting average with 19 hits in 45 at-bats and a team-best 13 runs scored. Sophomore Max Araya boasts a .395 BA and leads Middlebury with five doubles. Sophomore John Luke and rookie Jason Lock have each posted double-digit hit totals. Luke has scored 10 runs along with four doubles, a triple, a homerun and nine RBIs. Lock paces the Panthers with 10 RBIs.
On the mound, junior Cooper Byrne started two games, posting a 1-1 with a team-low 2.57 earned-run average. Byrne leads the staff with 17.0 innings pitched and nine strikeouts, while rookie Jake Stalcup has a 2.89 ERA with five strikeouts in 9.1 innings.
