Monkton Central team shines at Odyssey of the Mind tourney
MONKTON — At the Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament on Saturday, March 22, Monkton Central School’s team placed first in its division for writing and acting out the play “People Are People.” Judges commented that there was an “excellent stage presence by all characters” and a “wonderful use of humor.” The win qualifies the team to compete at the Odyssey of the Mind World Championship in Iowa later this spring.
The Monkton team also received two “Omer Awards,” given to a few select teams for “outstanding sportsmanship, behavior or talent.” Monkton received one Omer during the spontaneous portion of the tournament because “these team members exhibited exceptional, cohesive and enthusiastic teamwork before, during and after their challenge. Such teamwork and enthusiasm is commendable and a joy to watch,” said the head spontaneous judge.
After they completed their play, Monkton team members had to meet with the judges and explain aspects of their production. The judges awarded them with another Omer because they “undertook the task with respect for each other, remained calm under pressure and displayed support for their teammates and complete respect for the coaches and judges.” The problem captain said, “They were an impressive group of kids.”
