Youthful swimmers vie at big regional meets

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt./TROY, N.Y. — Area swimmers posted some impressive performances recently when the Middlebury Aquatic Club competed in the 2014 New England 12-and-Under Age Group Championship Meet at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction and the Bristol-based Addison Otter Swim Team raced at the Silver Short Course Championship at the RPI Robison Pool in Troy, NY.
Three Middlebury Aquatic Club swimmers competed in White River Junction between Feb. 27 and March 2, and all three set personal bests while finishing as high as fifth in the region.
Thomas Denton, 9, qualified in eight events and swam to personal bests in six of them; Charlie Hodson, 10, qualified in two events and earned personal bests in both; and Fraser Milligan, 11, posted a personal best in his race against top swimmers from around New England.
Denton’s results were:
•  Fifth in the 50-yard breaststroke (43.19).
•  Sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:33.44, personal best).
•  18th in the 100 Individual Medley (1:23.87, personal best).
•  20th in the 50 freestyle (33.17, personal best).
•  22nd in the 50 butterfly (38.79, personal best).
•  23rd in the 200 IM (3:04.02, personal best).
•  28th in the 100 free (1:13.77, personal best).
•  36th in the 50 back (40.60).
Hodson’s results were:
•  13th in the 50 breaststroke (41.10, personal best).
•  17th in the 100 breaststroke (1:30.77, personal best).
Milligan’s result was:
•  30th in the 200 breaststroke (3:10.55, personal best).
Their coach is Mike Delaney.
OTTER SWIMMERS
Meanwhile, the Otters and their coach Peter Bicknell swam in Troy on March 7-9. This is a big meet for the team and the last chance of the swim season to get a time to qualify for the Gold Championship, which will be held at the same pool the weekend of March 14-16.
Allison Croke and Noah Engvall where the highest finishers for the Otters, both garnering second place in their respective events. All of the kids swam in multiple events, and here are some highlights.
•  Emma Beauchemin, 12, placed 11 out of 84 competitors in the girls’ 11-12, 50 fly, 36.27.
•  Samantha Cox, 15, placed 30/32 in the girls’ 15&over, 100 back, 1:58.60.
•  Allison Croke, 9, placed 2/88 in the girls’ 9-10, 50 free, 36.13.
•  Leah Croke, 11, placed 11/97 in the girls’ 11-12, 50 breast, 43.01.
•  Leslie Donlin, 15, placed 18/25 in the girls’ 15&over, 200 IM, 2:49.50.
•  Annabelle Doucet, 10, placed 17/30 in the girls’ 9-10, 100 breast, 1:55.98.
•  Eliza Doucet, 8, placed 16/28 in the girls’ 8&under, 25 breast, 29.58.
•  Emma Doucet, 8, placed 49/51 in the girls’ 8&under, 25 free, 37.81.
•  Noah Engvall, 10, placed 2/36 in the boys’ 9-10, 50 breast, 50.61.
•  Peter Foley, 14, placed 18/29 in the boys’ 13-14, 100 back, 1:22.28.
•  Olivia Hawkins, 14, placed 21/61 in the girls’ 13-14, 100 breast, 1:26.10.
•  Emma Huestis, 11, placed 29/97 in the girls’ 11-12, 50 breast, 44.57.
•  Sadie Kass, 14, placed 25/61 in the girls’ 13-14, 100 breast, 1:27.62.
•  Karyn Kenfield, 12, placed 49/102 in the girls’ 11-12, 50 free, 34.70.
•  Robert Kenfield, 12, placed 9/49 in the boys’ 11-12, 50 free, 31.67.
•  Katie Mayer, 16, placed 11/28 in the girls’ 15&over, 100 fly, 1:13.56.
•  Shea McLaren, 10, placed 10/48 in the boys’ 9-10, 50 free, 37.56.
•  Richmond Rathbun, 13, placed 74/78 in the girls’ 13-14, 100 free, 1:25.09.
•  Sarah Rathbun, 13, placed 28/74 in the girls’ 13-14, 50 free, 29.85.
•  Sophie Rippner-Donovan, 14, placed 38/78 in the girls’ 13-14, 100 free, 1:07.46.
•  Emily Rooney, 11, placed 6/60 in the girls’ 11-12, 100 breast, 1:30.76.
•  Abigail Roy, 10, placed 12/56 in the girls’ 9-10, 100 IM, 1:37.31.
•  Evan Roy, 9, placed 26/36 in the boys’ 9-10, 50 breast, 1:03.20.
•  Oliver Roy, 12, placed 15/49 in the boys’ 11-12, 50 free, 32.70.
•  Tess Ruddy, 11, placed 38/113 in the girls’ 11-12, 100 IM, 1:25.05.
•  Samara Sausville, 17, placed 3/43 in the girls’ 15&over, 50 free, 27.80.
•  Enrique Serrano Lopez, 15, placed 14/40 in the boys’ 15&over, 50 free, 27.72.
