Middlebury Police Log: Police respond to stabbing, victim suspected
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report of a stabbing on Court Street on March 4. Police determined that the complainant had not been stabbed but had actually injured himself.
Police got some mental health counseling for the complainant.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Separated a Court Street couple engaged in a heated verbal argument on March 4.
• Cited Christopher J. Shores, 19, of Middlebury for retail theft, after he allegedly stole some batteries and lip balm from Hannaford Supermarket on March 4.
• Assisted a Valley View resident who reported receiving harassing text messages on March 4.
• Were informed on March 4 that an unspecified amount of cash had been stolen from the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center campus. Police continue to investigate the matter.
• Investigated two truancy cases at Middlebury Union Middle School on March 4.
• Responded to a noise complaint in the Cottage Lane area on March 5.
• Referred on March 5, to the Vermont Department of Children and Families, a possible sexual assault case that allegedly occurred last year.
• Cited Justin Heath, 23, of Starksboro for driving while intoxicated, following their investigation of a vehicle in the Jackson Lane neighborhood on March 5.
• Assisted a local woman who on March 6 claimed she had been kidnapped, but was actually safe and sound. Police said the woman was coping with some mental health issues.
• Cited Jamie Jennings, 36, of Middlebury for false pretenses, on March 6. Police said Jennings is alleged to have taken money from an ex-wife’s bank account. Police said they also cited Jennings for driving with a suspended license after he allegedly drove to the police department while under suspension.
• Were informed that someone had allegedly stolen a can of beer from the Champlain Farms store on Court Street on March 6.
• Ticketed a man who had received a small amount of marijuana in a package he received at the UPS store on March 6. Police had received a tip from store officials that the package smelled of marijuana. The recipient agreed to open the package for police.
• Took a drunken man to the Grace House in Rutland on March 6.
• Assisted Courtyard by Marriott staff in removing some unwanted guests from their room on March 6.
• Spoke to a Weybridge Street resident who alleged on March 7 that his neighbors had intentionally vomited on his front door.
• Cited Robert C. Gilbert, 35, of Rutland for driving with a suspended license (criminal offense), following a stop for having no front license plate, on East Main Street on March 7.
• Assisted a Middlebury College student who had been receiving harassing phone calls on March 7.
• Assisted a Valley View resident who reported receiving a harassing phone call on March 8.
• Investigated a report of three men allegedly smoking marijuana in the parking lot of the Middlebury Inn on March 8. Police said there was no indication the men had been smoking pot.
• Ordered a New Haven resident to come back to the Olympia Sports dumpster and retrieve seven bags of trash that he had placed in that receptacle on March 8.
• Responded to the Memorial Baptist Church’s warming shelter on March 9 to check on a report of a suicidal man. Police said the man was very drunk and was taken to a detox facility.
• Received a report on March 9 about a Middlebury man whose identity had allegedly been stolen. Police said the man’s identity was being used to receive and cash multiple money orders from Nigeria. Police said they have recovered three such money orders and expect more to arrive in the mail this week.
• Responded to a noise complaint at a Seymour Street residence on March 9.
• Served no-trespass orders on a man and a woman for McDonald’s Restaurant on March 9. Police said the man had been sleeping in the restaurant bathroom.
• Served court diversion paperwork on an underage drinker on Middlebury College campus on March 9.
