Vergennes Police Log: City police attend to variety of troubles

VERGENNES — Vergennes police — who as of Tuesday were more than halfway moved into their new North Main Street headquarters — dealt with a variety of incidents between Feb. 24 and March 2, including fireworks tossing, car accidents and online harassment.
In that seven-day period, city police:
•  On Feb. 24 dealt with a minor two-car accident on Adele Drive.
•  On Feb. 24 asked a West Main Street resident to move a car parked in the city right of way and blocking snow removal.
•  On Feb. 25 referred a resident with an Internet fraud complaint to the attorney general’s office.
•  On Feb. 25 called the city animal control officer to pick up a dog running loose on South Water Street.
•  On Feb. 25 dealt with a Vergennes Union High School truancy issue.
•  On Feb. 26 cited a juvenile for fireworks possession and use after he tossed a lit firework from a pickup truck onto the city green.
•  On Feb. 27 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Crescent Drive.
•  On Feb. 27 accepted unused pain meds from a resident for disposal.
•  On Feb. 28 responded to an alleged home invasion at a Walker Avenue home that the resident claimed had been staged by individuals who arrived on snowmobiles; police found no evidence and concluded the resident was confused.
•  On Feb. 28 determined as required by law that an untimely death at the elderly housing center on Armory Lane was not due to foul play.
•  On Feb. 28 took a report that a car parked on Monkton Road had been damaged.
•  On Feb. 28 dealt with minor car accidents on Main and South Maple streets.
•  On March 1 handled a case of Facebook harassment; police spoke to the father of the alleged perpetrator and learned he was having mental issues and was receiving counseling.
•  On March 2 helped Vermont State Police by responding to an accident on Route 17 in Addison.
•  On March 2 spoke to a man that a woman said had taken items from her apartment without permission; police recovered one of the items.
