UD-3 voters approve first step toward new town gym
MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday evening voted 306-118, by paper ballot, to allow the UD-3 board to negotiate a lease with the town of Middlebury for a Creek Road parcel that would host an 11,500-square-foot recreation facility.
The vote is another step in the process that started last summer when the Middlebury selectboard announced a proposal to tear down the municipal building and town gym and construct a new building and gym elsewhere. A key to the plan was that Middlebury College would provide $5.5 million for the project in exchange for the land where the Municipal Building and gym currently stand, and turn it into a park.
A complete wrap-up of Tuesday’s vote and preceding discussion — which produced an overflowing crowd in the Middlebury Union High School auditorium — will appear in tomorrow’s edition of the Addison Independent and on addisonindependent.com.
