MUHS boys’ hoop to host; VUHS, Mt. Abe play late

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high school boys’ basketball teams were set to open Division II postseason play on Wednesday after the deadline for this issue of the Independent, while Middlebury will host a D-I first-round game on Thursday.
The Vermont Principals’ Association awarded VUHS (9-11) the No. 7 seed in D-II on a tiebreaker with No. 8 Fair Haven (9-11) after both tied in the quality-point standings and split two regular season games.
The defending champion Commodores were set to host No. 10 Bellows Falls (7-13) on Wednesday night. The teams have not previously met this winter.
If the Commodores advanced, they will face the winner of another Wednesday game that saw No. 15 Mount Abe (4-16) set to visit No. 2 Lyndon (15-5), two other teams that have not met this winter.
The next round is set for Friday at 7 p.m. If the Eagles and Commodores both prevailed, VUHS will host Mount Abe. If VUHS lost and the Eagles won, the Eagles will visit Bellows Falls. If VUHS won and Mount Abe lost, the Commodores will head to Lyndon.
MUHS (11-9) earned a D-I home game for a second straight season with a big win this past Friday over VUHS. No. 10 Brattleboro will visit the Tigers at 7 p.m. on Thursday; again, the teams have not met this winter.
If the Tigers prevail on Thursday, they would in all likelihood travel to face No. 2 Burlington on Saturday at 2 p.m., unless No. 15 Spaulding surprised the Seahorses on Wednesday.
