Vermont State Police Log: County man allegedly kidnapped, assaulted

ADDISON COUNTY — A New Haven man was allegedly kidnapped by a man with whom he hoped to transact some business.
Vermont State Police received a complaint from Richard Esty, 67, of New Haven, who said he responded to a Craigslist post and arranged to meet with Jonathan Henry, 28, of Marshfield on the afternoon of Jan. 27. Esty told police that during their meeting in East Montpelier, Henry physically assaulted him, drove him to Berlin where he extorted money from him, and returned him to his vehicle.
On Jan. 31, state police and officials from the Department of Corrections, Barre Probation and Parole, arrested Henry at his residence for a probation violation and lodged him at the Northeast Correctional Complex in St. Johnsbury.
On Feb. 4, two correctional officers took Henry to Central Vermont Hospital for a medical procedure, and Henry escaped on foot. After a manhunt involving multiple agencies, Henry was apprehended near a mobile home park in Berlin. That evening he was cited for kidnapping, unlawful restraint, extortion and simple assault in the incident with Esty on Jan. 27.
Henry is scheduled to answer the charges in Washington County Superior Court on Feb. 13. He is being held without bail at the jail in St. Johnsbury.
