Castillo jumps to gold for Commodore track

NORTHFIELD — Vergennes Union High School junior Chris Castillo won the Division II boys’ long jump at Saturday’s indoor track championship meet at Norwich University to highlight the day for the Commodore team.
Castillo also placed sixth in the triple jump to score 16 of the VUHS boys’ 21 points — a score good enough to put the Commodores in seventh place among 13 D-II teams competing. Fair Haven edged Rice, 106-103, for the D-II boys’ title.
Also scoring for the VUHS boys were junior Sebby Crowell in the 55-meter dash and senior Matteo Palmer at 3,000 meters; each took seventh, but moved up in the team standings once independents’ places were removed.
The VUHS girls tallied 16 points to finish ninth among the 13 scoring teams. Senior Alix Kauffman scored 10 of those 16 points by taking fourth at 300 meters and seventh at 55 meters, each time moving up once independents’ finishes were discounted.
Juniors Ally Stearns and Paige Stolen each posted fifth-place finishes, in the shot put and 600-meter race, respectively, to round out the VUHS results.
Also competing were two Mount Abe independents, senior Natalie May (fifth in the girls’ 1,000 in 3:52.50), and junior Chris Carter, ninth in the boys’ 600 (1:38.58) and 18th in the 300 (43.86).
The complete VUHS results were:
•  Boys’ long jump: 1. Castillo, 19 feet, 6.5 inches.
•  Boys’ triple jump: 6. Castillo, 36-9.5.
•  Boys’ 55 meters: 7. Crowell, 7.32.
•  Boys’ 1,000: 9. Crowell, 41.65; 16. Chris Leach, 43.30; 17. Castillo, 43.86.
