Tiger girls’ hockey wins twice to retain first place in Div. I

JERICHO — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team picked up two road wins last week to maintain its hold on first place in Division II with a 14-3 record.
On Wednesday, the Tigers blanked host D-I foe Champlain Valley-South Burlington, 4-0, outshooting the Rebel Hawks by 37-13. MUHS got goals from Monroe Cromis, Timi Carone, Angela Carone and Lauren Bartlett, and Julia Carone picked up two assists. Goalie Baily Ryan worked the 13-save shutout, while CVU-SB’s Courtney Peyko made 33 saves.
On Saturday, the Tigers hung on for a 5-4 win over host Mount Mansfield, taking a 5-2 lead early in the third on Timi Carone’s second goal of the game before the Cougars made it close. Sara Boe also tallied twice, and Angela Carone scored the other Tiger goal. Ryan stopped 29 shots, and goalie Fiona Dulude made 32 saves for the 5-12 Cougars.
The Tigers maintain a slim lead in D-II over Burr & Burton (12-2-2) and Northfield (11-3-1). Those three teams will earn the top three seeds in some order. After the Tigers host Rice on Wednesday, they visit Northfield on Saturday and host Burr & Burton on Feb. 19; those latter two games will probably decide the order of finish.
