Frost Mountain skiers compete at Trapps
STOWE — Frost Mountain Nordic Club skiers competed this past weekend at the Trapp Family Lodge — site of the upcoming Junior National Championships in March — in the third set of races in the highly competitive Eastern Cup Series, with some solid results.
In Saturday’s 1.5-kilometer classic sprint competition, Cornwall’s Sophie Hodges and Weybridge’s Dorothy Punderson competed for Frost Mountain in the girls’ races.
Hodges qualified for the semifinal rounds by taking sixth in the individual 16-and-under preliminary qualifying race, won her semifinal heat, and ended up third overall. Punderson finished 93rd in the U-20 competition.
On the boys’ side, U-16 skiers Nick Wilkerson of Middlebury and Sam Hodges of Cornwall just missed the 12-person preliminary cut, with Wilkerson in 15th and Hodges in 22nd.
In Sunday’s 5K skate races, Sophie Hodges took sixth in the girls’ U-16 event, Punderson was 42nd in the girls’ U-18 race, and in the boys’ U-16 competition Sam Hodges was 15th and Wilkerson took 26th.
Frost Mountain coach Cam MacKugler also noted that several club alums skated for college teams as the University of Vermont carnival wrapped up on Sunday: Britta Clark for Bates, Alia Johnson for Middlebury and Mac Groves for Bowdoin.
Groves fared the best, taking third in a sprint event, MacKugler said.
