Otters only winners in local girls’ hoop
ADDISON COUNTY — All four local union high school girls’ basketball teams dropped games on Monday, including a road loss by Mount Abraham that cost the Eagles a chance to take over first place in Division II, while on Tuesday Otter Valley picked up a road win.
EAGLES
Mount Abe lost to host South Burlington, 43-31. The 6-4 Rebels led by six at the half and pulled away in the fourth quarter to seal the Lake Division win. Meghan Livingston (13 points) and Ashlie Fay (nine) led Mount Abe, which dropped to 7-3, with all the losses to D-I competition, and into third place in D-II.
Fair Haven (8-2) held onto first place in D-II despite losing at home to Mt. Anthony on Monday. Milton (7-2) leapfrogged the Eagles in the D-II standings by winning on Monday. The Eagles can at least pass Milton in the standings by defeating the Yellowjackets at home on Saturday, assuming they also got past a one-win Missisquoi squad on Wednesday.
COMMODORES
VUHS rallied from 15 points down in the third quarter to lead visiting Harwood by four with 1:20 to go, but saw the Highlanders score the game’s final six points to prevail, 44-42.
Taylor Paquette sparked VUHS with nine points and career highs of 20 rebounds and four assists. Nikki Salley scored a game-high 13 points for VUHS, and K.C. Ambrose chipped in seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Commodores from slipping to 3-7.
OTTERS
Visiting Brattleboro improved to 7-3 and led throughout in a 38-25 victory over the Otters. OV received eight points from Olivia Bloomer and five from Amy Jones.
On Tuesday, OV edged host Springfield, 54-52, when Brittany Bushey sank two free throws with six seconds to go to thwart a Cosmo comeback bid. Bushey finished with 13 to lead OV, and Bloomer scored 12 as OV moved to 4-7. Springfield dropped to 4-8 despite 32 points from Chelsea McAllister.
TIGERS
Visiting Milton took a big early lead on the way to a 62-27 victory over the Tigers , also on Monday.
Hannah Hobbs scored 13 points for the Tigers, who were hosting Mount Mansfield on Wednesday in search of their first win and will visit the Commodores on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
