Local grapplers reach podium in Essex tournament
ESSEX — Five local wrestlers earned top-six finishes at the Michael J. Baker Classic, hosted this past weekend by Essex High School.
Three Vergennes Union High School athletes reached the podium to help the Commodores finish 12th with 70 points: Kaegan Pearsall took second at 160 pounds, Brandon Cousino was fifth at 152, and Ethan Reardon placed fifth at 113.
Two Otters placed as Otter Valley Union High School took 18th with 32 points: Adam Sherwin took fifth at 220, and Tyson Cram finished sixth in the 120-pound class.
Josh Roy was the most successful Mount Abraham wrestler, finishing with a 3-2 record, but one win short of the podium. Josh Johnson, Josh Russin and Dylan Little also competed for the Eagles.
For the Commodores, Trevon Smith picked up a pair of wins at 126, while Ryan Paquin won once at 170. Jeb Hodsden also competed for VUHS.
For the Otters, Nate Doty at 195, Jared Felkl at 160 and Neiko Desabrais at 126 all picked up wins. Also competing for OV were Mathew Munson, Sean Martin, Evan Perry, Joe Palmer and Eric Manning.
