Panther track competes well

HANOVER, N.H. — On Sunday at the Dartmouth Relays, Middlebury College women’s indoor track and field captain Laura Strom won the high jump with the NCAA Division III top height thus far this winter to help lead her team to a sixth-place finish (19 points) out of 14 teams.
The men’s team also competed and placed ninth (six points) out of 14 squads.
During the women’s high jump, Strom competed against 23 other participants, including many from Division I schools, and leapt to a height of 5’-8.5”. That clearance tied her with Dartmouth’s Kaitlin Whitehorn, but Strom won the event based on fewer misses at the particular height and garnered her team 10 points.
Additionally, Panther sophomore Alexandra Morris turned in the nation’s third-fastest time thus far in the 400-meter dash in 58.99; she got second and earned eight team points. During the 4×200-meter relay, the quartet of Madison Goodstein, Sara Sobolewski, Emma McGuirk and Paige Fernandez raced to the line for an eighth-place finish time of 1:52.44.
Other notable performances for the women came in the long jump by Day Robins (ninth, 15’-11.75”) and Chelsea Montello of Orwell (10th, 15-11.50), and in the triple jump, where McGuirk  was 8th with a hop, skip and jump of 33’-2” and Hannah Blackburn and Erin Rea tied for 10th (32-3.75).
In the men’s pole vault, Jason McCallum recorded a fourth-place showing by clearing the bar at 14-1.25. In the triple jump, James Lynch recorded a distance of 39-11.5, good for 10th.
On the track, Alex Nichols took sixth in the 400-meter dash in 50.97, and Jake Wood, Conor Simons, Brandon Cushman and Nichols took seventh in the 4×400 relay.
