Tiger girls’ hockey vies for first place

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team split a pair of games last week. The Tigers are 5-1 and are in a battle for first place in Division II with two other one-loss teams, Northfield and Burr & Burton, both of whom will play in the Tigers’ annual holiday tournament this week at the Memorial Sports Center.
That tournament will open with a key game: Northfield will take on MUHS at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Tigers will then meet Mount Mansfield on Saturday at 5 p.m. Burr & Burton and MMU will play at 1 p.m. on Thursday, and Northfield and MMU will square off at 1 p.m. on Friday.
On this past Wednesday, the Tigers blanked Hartford, 5-0, as Sara Boe recorded two goals and an assist and Molly Wetmore scored twice. Timi Carone added the fifth goal, and Angela Carone picked up two assists. Hartford dropped to 3-2.
On Saturday host Burr & Burton dealt the Tigers their first loss, 3-2. The Bulldogs Megan’s Grabher’s second goal was the game-winner and came with five minutes to go. B&B goalie Kaylie Benson made 11 saves. Lauren Bartlett and Julia Carone scored for the Tigers, and goalie Baily Ryan made 18 saves.
