Film explores impacts of fracking

SHOREHAM — An educational film series is being offered in Shoreham at the Platt Memorial Public Library during the month of November.
Two of the featured documentary films focus on the impacts that gas fracking has had on the water and environmental landscape. The last film focuses on the evidence of climate change through rapid glacial ice melt. Plans are also under way to offer additional educational opportunities early next year with an emphasis on practical energy saving alternatives.
“Gasland,” a 2010 American documentary written and directed by Josh Fox, was screened on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2011, the film focuses on communities in the United States impacted by natural gas drilling and, specifically, a method of horizontal drilling into shale formations known as slickwater fracking.
Still to come are “Triple Divide,” on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. and “Chasing Ice,” on Monday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m.
“Triple Divide” attempts to answer the question, “How are state regulations and industry handling the impacts from fracking?” The film reveals how water contamination is being covered up by the industry and the state, essentially rewriting the history of water quality in Pennsylvania by dismissing predrill tests. Meanwhile, state regulators are using compliance as a means of regulating without enforcing the law, abandoning the public in the wake of shale gas development.
“Chasing Ice” is a 2012 documentary film about the efforts of photographer James Balog and his Extreme Ice Survey to publicize the effects of climate change, directed by Jeff Orlowski.
This film series is sponsored by Vermont Citizens for the Public Good. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Barb Wilson at 897-5430.
