Middlebury women’s soccer extends streak
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 13 games on Saturday, but settled for a 1-1 tie at Wesleyan (2-6-5, 1-4-4 NESCAC). The Panthers (10-1-3, 8-1-1 NESCAC) are ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division III and had already clinched the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC tournament. They and will host a quarterfinal game this Saturday at a time to be announced.
Middlebury’s best chance to score in the first half came with 15:42 left on a penalty kick. But Cardinal keeper Jessica Tollman denied Panther Moria Sloan.
The Cardinals scored less than five minutes later. Sarah Sylla took a hard crossing pass from Hannah Stone and banged it low to the right of Middlebury goalie Elizabeth Foody (six saves) at 10:55.
Middlebury scored less than six minutes into the second half, when Jamie Soroka beat the Cardinal defense and knocked a shot past Tollman off a pass from Hannah Robinson.
Tollman came up big a couple of more times for the Cardinals in the half to keep the score tied. Middlebury had the only two shots in the overtime period, but neither team was able to mount a sustained attack. Middlebury outshot Wesleyan, 13-7 in the contest.
