VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Oct. 2 cited a city woman for resisting arrest, an action taken after they learned there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest when she showed up at the police department because she was worried about her cat’s health.
Police lodged Kathy May Kahlstrom, 60, at the Chittenden County Correctional Center after she allegedly tried to flee the station, physically resisted arrest, and falsely accused the officer on duty of assaulting her. Kahlstrom was calmed with help from the Addison County Sheriff’s Department and Vermont State Police, according to city police.
Vergennes police also said charges of animal negligence or cruelty were also possible. The cat was treated at the Vergennes Animal Hospital and turned over to the Addison County Humane Society. A humane society representative last month went with city police to evaluate the animal, which at that time was found to be OK.
Vergennes police have also recently responded to noise and trespassing complaints involving Kahlstrom, they said. The outstanding warrant was for failure to appear in court, according to police.
In other action between Sept. 30 and Oct. 6, Vergennes police:
•  On Sept. 30 ticketed a Vergennes Union High School student for passing a school bus on school grounds.
•  On Sept. 30 began processing a bad check complaint for a Main Street business.
•  On Sept. 30 directed traffic around a delivery truck that had gone off North Main Street and gotten stuck.
•  On Sept. 30 stood by at a child custody exchange at the John Graham Shelter at the request of one of the parents involved.
•  On Sept. 30 called a tow truck for a motorist for a disabled car on Route 22A in Panton, and stood by until it arrived.
•  On Oct. 1 cited Emaon Deegan, 21, of South Burlington for possession of marijuana and speeding on North Main Street.
•  On Oct. 1 separated and calmed a couple arguing in the Champlain Farms parking lot.
•  On Oct. 1 calmed an 11-year-old who was arguing with and started striking her mother at the Graham Shelter, and notified the Counseling Service of Addison County.
•  On Oct. 2 following a 911 call found an elderly woman on a Green Street kitchen floor unable to get up; police forced their way into the residence and called the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.
•  On Oct. 2 dealt with a tobacco issue at VUHS.
•  On Oct. 2 began investigating an allegation that a woman’s ex-boyfriend had stolen her electronic benefits card and charged $175 of goods on it.
•  On Oct. 3 looked unsuccessfully for a suspicious man who knocked on the door of a Second Street home.
•  On Oct. 3 stood by at a local tow truck business while a man paid his bill, an action taken because the business operator said the man had threatened him over the phone.
•  On Oct. 3 responded to North Street, where a man had allegedly pushed and slapped at least one woman among a group of people gathered on an enclosed porch. Police said the man was gone when they arrived and earlier had been issued a no-trespass order for the premises; they are seeking him to cite him for felony unlawful trespass, and said other charges are possible.
•  On Oct. 3 and 4 helped motorists get into their locked cars on Main and North streets, respectively.
•  On Oct. 4 helped a Bristol police officer arrest an unruly suspect.
•  On Oct. 4 calmed an arguing Sunset Drive couple.
•  On Oct. 4 accepted for storage a leaf blower that a School Street resident found on his property; police hope to hear from its rightful owner.
•  On Oct. 4 heard that a camper had been stolen from the Whispering Pines campground in Panton; police learned that it had been taken by the man that sold it to the complainants, and it was a civil dispute. However, it contained personal property that he refused to return. Police referred the issue to VSP.
•  On Oct. 5 found a highly intoxicated woman on South Water Street and turned her over to her boyfriend.
•  On Oct. 5 cited Joshua Kelly, 23, of Ferrisburgh for driving under the influence, second offense, after stopping his truck for speeding on Route 7.
•  On Oct. 5 helped VSP remove two drunken wedding crashers from a New Haven restaurant; VSP took them to a detox facility. 
•  On Oct. 5 backed up VSP at an Addison home, where a drunken man was threatening a homeowner; VSP took him to detox and issued a no-trespass order.
•  On Oct. 6 took a report that Adderall had been stolen from an East Street home.
•  On Oct. 6 determined on his behalf that a man’s ex-wife was OK.
•  On Oct. 6 searched unsuccessfully for paddles that a boater might have left behind at a city boat ramp.
