Ilsley Library to host workshop for students writing college essays

MIDDLEBURY — Strategies for College (SFC) will offer a free workshop called “Writing a Winning College Essay” on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Ilsley Library in Middlebury. The workshop is for high school juniors and seniors who are planning to go on to college and who are seeking help beginning, drafting or editing their college essays.
The workshop will be led by author, editor and theater director Elizabeth Leroux. Leroux will facilitate a number of activities from getting ideas to flow, to finding your voice, to editing a final draft. Students will be actively involved in exercises throughout the workshop, including reviewing accepted students’ essays, and will leave the workshop with ideas, direction and resources.
Leroux brings 20 years of experience working with high school students to her work. She is a certified secondary English teacher with an MA from Columbia. She is also a seasoned theater director with 25 productions to her credit. Her combined experience in writing, editing and theater make her a dynamic presenter. She currently advises 50 seniors on their college essays.
Leroux will be joined by two experts in the college search, selection and application field, Howard Vermont and Andrea L. Torello. Verman has 40 years’ experience guiding young people as a teacher, a leader in innovative education, a principal and as partner at SFC. He has visited 135 colleges and advised students from six states and Canada. Torello has spent 39 years working with youth as a teacher, a guidance director and founder of College Bound. Torello is also a senior associate with SFC. Torello has visited colleges across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The three presenters have 30 years’ experience in the college consultant business.
The workshop is limited to 30 participants. The workshop is free but registration is required. To register, contact Andrea Torello at [email protected]. Registration confirmation and some pre-workshop reading will be sent via return email.
