Owner of Independent buys ‘Vermont Sports’ magazine

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Sports Magazine has been sold to Addison Independent owner and publisher Angelo Lynn.
The magazine, distributed free around the state and in metro areas throughout New England, covers outdoor pursuits and adventure, such as hiking, cycling, mountaineering, skiing and more. Lynn will begin publishing Vermont Sports with the November issue. The magazine’s current publisher and editor, Sky Barsch of Barre Town, will continue to help edit the magazine for the next few issues in her free time. She is the associate publisher of Vermont Life magazine.
“Angelo and his family are in the perfect position to take Vermont Sports to the next level,” said Barsch, who purchased the business in 2010. “The Lynns are seasoned athletes as well as experts in publishing, so they have the two passions that are at the heart of Vermont Sports.”
Lynn’s Addison Press Inc. owns Vermont Ski & Ride magazine; The Addison County Independent (based in Middlebury); The Reporter, which covers the Brandon-Pittsford-Proctor-West Rutland area; and Killington-based Mountain Times. Lynn also co-owns the Colchester Sun and Essex Reporter with his brother Emerson Lynn, and has interests in digital publishing through a partnership with Route 802’s statewide network of mobile apps and a partnership with Burlington-based Localvore Today. Lynn, his three daughters and his wife have all worked in journalism and were recently featured in The New York Times.
“We’re excited to be able to combine our love of outdoor sports with our interest and deep connection in Vermont journalism for the past 30 years,” Lynn said, noting that he and his family have been avid alpine skiers for the past 30 years, as well as hikers, runners, bikers, water skiers, kayakers and canoe racers. “Like many Vermonters, we love playing and exercising in the outdoors and we’re eager to be part of a magazine that has covered those stories so well for the past two decades and continues to show Vermonters and visitors all the great ways to play in our state.”
Lynn said he hoped to build on that solid foundation.
“Sky has done a great job of carrying on the tradition established at Vermont Sports, creating a clean look and easy-to-read style, and we’re thrilled she’ll be working with us for the next several issues to help with the transition and maintain that continuity for the readers,” he said.
“With our larger organization,” Lynn added, “our hope is that we’ll be able to cover the scene in new ways and, as Sky suggested, continue to take Vermont Sports on its upward climb.”
The magazine was founded in 1990 by Kate Carter of Waterbury, and has served as a voice of the racing, recreation and adventure community in Vermont. With an extensive calendar of events, inspiring feature articles, and informative regular departments, Vermont Sports is a go-to magazine for the outdoor crowd. Published 10 times a year, it is available throughout Vermont and in bordering states.
