Artist T.J. Cunningham showing lovely mountain landscapes

MIDDLEBURY — The Edgewater Gallery will hold a reception for its September artist of the month, T.J. Cunningham, on Friday, Sept. 13, from 5-7 p.m., during the monthly Middlebury Arts Walk. “Adirondack Lake,” a series of landscapes, is on exhibit through the end of the month.
A self-proclaimed fledgling hiker, Cunningham recently strapped a 60-pound pack to his back, traveling taboret and easel in tow, and headed into New York’s Adirondack Park — which had piqued his interest while painting it into the background of his 2012 painting “Addison Skies.” Originally intending to study the whole Adirondack range, Cunningham, awestruck by the hugeness of the park, quickly noted his naivety and focused on the Cascade Lake area, creating countless studies to take back to his studio.
What comes out of this journey is a mesmerizing new series, which Edgewater is proud to feature for the month of September. His Sept. 13 opening reception will feature ensembles by the Champlain Philharmonic, as well as wine and hors d’oeuvres.
At 25, Cunningham has quickly become one of the gallery’s most heavily collected artists, as his poetic landscapes depict the spirit and romance of their subject matter in a manner that truly resonates with viewers, regardless of their familiarity with the land featured. A highly talented portrait painter, Cunningham has recently been commissioned by the gallery to paint former Gov. Madeleine Kunin’s portrait, which will hang in the gallery for one year prior to its donation to the charity of Kunin’s choice. Sittings are scheduled to begin later this year, and more details will be provided as the relationship between and Cunningham and Kunin evolves.
